On Friday, I got the chance to see different majors' work in the Cub. The two that stood out to me were the Interior Design poster that talked about the new School of Design and Construction and the fashion one that displayed some dresses that seniors have made. The new School of Design was interesting to me because it was about a project that we did earlier this year with the Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Construction Management students. I learned about how in two years, all freshman from the School of Design will have all their first year classes together to avoid separating them and allow all the students to have the same design language and get used to working together. I think it will be a really good idea for the school because when we were designing the bench together, we all had different approaches and some students understand why interior design students were talking about using a concept. I feel like combining the classes will help unify the programs.
I really enjoyed talking to the fashion students that were there. They had to design a dress out of sustainable materials and one girl designed a dress out of old wine corks. She said her mom is in the wine business and had a lot of extra corks so she gave them to her. She dyed some of the corks in wine for three days then dried them to give them color which looked really good contrasting against the original brown color of the other corks. She said that someone has actually worn the dress and it will be featured in the fashion show this year during Mom's Weekend. There were other dresses there as well, one which was made out of programs for the fashion show that were misprinted last year. They took the design of the dress on the cover of the program and used the paper to make the dress. I really liked how it turned out and they said they used it last year as to promote the fashion show.
